Duck Races

Duck what? Yes duck races.

Things you should know before proceeding: 1) this concept was conceived of before the consumption of any alcoholic beverages (and not by me); and 2) no ducks (real or otherwise) were hurt by the duck races.

So, it was a rainy Friday night. Angie, Kary and I were walking to dinner before going to meet up with Jane and Dave for wine and cheese. As we were walking in the pouring rain, the gutters were full of water. Someone (not me) alluded to floating ducks down the gutter.

We had dinner, went for some laughs as we had one glass of wine (no cheese). But the wine store closed at 9 (who closes at 9?), leaving the five of us without anything to do. So someone (not me) brought back up the duck races. We decided to go to Jane and Dave's house, but we had to pick up the ducks before going there.

Little did we know that Kary has a pretty "impressive" collection of rubby duckies. (Yes, I am using the word "impressive" quite loosely.): So after a while of talking, we decided that even though the rain had tapered off the gutters still had enough water flowing in them and off we went to race the duckies. Kary, being the good duck mom that she is, was a bit concerned (or obsessed) her duckies would go down the gutter and out to the ocean - so she positioned herself to catch them all. We (and by we - I mean she) did have one panicked moment when she thought one got away - but alas it was a false alarm. While, I am not sure the humor and silliness of the idea comes through on this blog or in the pictures, I will note that Dave has admitted (without the consumption of any alcohol) that despite the fact he thought it was a ridiculous idea at first, it was actually pretty fun. So don't scoff until you try it! I am sure Kary will be more than willing to volunteer her duckies for the next event provided you take good care of them!

The ducks were the commercialized substitute for the self made floatation devises/boats that are traditional of the rainy day gutter races. The race course was cut short due to the low flow of the water and the wimpiness of the racers who were said it was "too dark and cold". Races best held during daylight on a rainy day with diposable floating devices. Particiipants usually sober but a slight inebriation may add to fun.
