Milestones

This year has been full of many milestones for me, so I figured I would start keeping track of the little and big ones along the way. Milestone 1: This Blog I decided to start this blog to keep track of the various milestones in my life generally, and keep track of my newest athletic endeavors, in particular. I also figured I spent many years of my life not really sharing what I have been up to and have decided to use this blog to change that going forward. Milestone 2: Running 8 miles The Pasadena Marathon is in November. So I decided I am going to run at least a half marathon. Part of me thinks I should just train and run the entire thing and part if me thinks "that is sure a long way to go for these short legs." But I am training, and we will see how I feel as things go on. Today's training was to run 8 miles. I was a bit intimidated because I cannot recall the last time I had run 8 miles - and not sure I have ever run 8 miles in my life without stopping. According to our pace charts, my goal time was 1:36. I actually finished in 132:50, and was happy that I met that goal. I had concerns around Mile 7, but figured I had run too far "to miss it by that much" - as Maxwell Smart would say. So I made sure to pick up the pace a little so I would meet my time. But equally important for me to my time was not stopping when I saw a hill. I planned my route with the knowledge that except for a short segment, miles 3-7 were essentially up a slow grade. I was not sure I would end up running it all because normally my brain automatically equates any uphill with walking. I somehow convince myself I cannot do it. But I know it is a mental block - and one I was actually able to get through today. With the exception of stopping for a stop light at three minutes into my run for 18 seconds - I ran the entire 8 miles without stopping again! And for those of you wondering about the title of my blog - Res Ipsa Loquitur is a latin term that means "the thing speaks for itself." Seemed like an appropriate name for a blog and for someone who works in the law. So welcome!
