Mud Run - June 2010

So my fouth attempt at the Camp Pendleton Mud run was probably the muddiest and the hardest. But I must admit it was also the most uneventful - and I mean that in a good way.

I ran the boots and uts division - with Team Misdirected (Jane and Joanne) plus Carrie and Carmen. Here we are before the race.

We had a great team that worked hard and supported one another.

In typical Camp Pendleton fashion, it was a cloudy morning until minutes before the race started the sun came out in blazing fashion. So by the time we got to the fire trucks - a mere 1/2 mile in, the water felt refreshing.

As it turned out, the boots were not really much of a an issue for me. Pretty comfortable actually. But after mile 4 where we had to swim across the 5 foot deep lake, my pants felt like they weighted 15 pounds more than the start. Must be the mud collecting in my pockets - or so I thought at the time.

Coincidentally, it was at this point that my energy really started to wane. Looking back I decided it was a failure to eat enough in the prior 36 hours - 1100 calories with a 3-hour hike the day before probably doesn't cut it I guess. But I pressed on.

Our team did well and stuck together as we went through the obstacles. By the last hill, I was happy for the race to be over. So we crawled through the mud and finished . . .

We ended up taking 1st place in our division -- and we had dramatically improved our time.

But we plan to do even better next time!!!
