I Love Football

Anyone who knows me knows that I love football - both professional and college. And anyone who knows me knows that I follow both UCLA Bruins and the USC Trojans - as I am an alumni of both. So this weekend was the kick-off of the college football season. It is almost like Christmas to me. USC played Virginia - beat them 52-7 and was not really a game after the 1st quarter. Next up for them Ohio State, which should be a great game. But the game of this weekend was the UCLA game. While the day was hot, it was a nice afternoon to walk down to the Rose Bowl and enjoy a great football game. Here I am with the Heisman Trophy. I figure I probably would never see it again, so why not.

They had jumpers in honor of our brave service men and women - here are a few landing in the stadium.

The game itself was a bit ugly in the 1st half. The Bruin offense was stilted to say the least. The 3rd string quarterback who started, ended up with four interceptions in the first half - including one for a touchdown with 23 seconds left in the half.

But the offense made some things happen and ended up having the lead with 6:41 left. They stopped Tennessee, but were called for a face mask penalty. Tennessee then scored - leaving UCLA with 2 minutes left to play. But much to their credit they hung in there and scored with 23 seconds remaining. While people were pouring out of the stadium, Tennessee drove for 30 or so yards and hit a long field goal. It was tied! Oh the agony.

So in the first overtime, UCLA could only get 3 points. It looked like that might doom them. But the defense stopped Tennessee, and they missed a fairly short field goal - giving UCLA an improbaly victory, which was celebrated with fireworks.

So, all in all, a good Labor Day and a good weekend!
