Big Bear - May 2009

It was time to head up to Big Bear for the weekend to enjoy the outdoors. Saturday we decided to hike up to Castle Rock and then up to Bluff Lake. Not sure we could have asked for any better weather. Castle Rock is only about a mile from the road (steep uphill) - then we had to scramble up some rocks to get to the top.
But the views from the top were just beautiful!
And we look very small from the hillside - can you tell who got out in Simon Says?
From there it was off to Bluff Lake. Which required us to trudge through mountains of snow Negotiate large swamps. . .
Avoid dangerous animals . . .
But we were rewarded with another great view.
From there we had to lift boulders to get through
And then on to see the largest LodgePole tree in the area. Apparently it is 110 feet and they estimate it is over 400 years old!
But it was treacherous - as Dave got stuck in the snow.
So we headed back to the cabin . . . .
Yes it's a bit run down. But don't hate.
O.k., maybe the cabin is a bit nicer than this - possibly looking like this!
Then it was time to negotiate the fallen trees . . .
And no hike is complete without a post-hike refreshment
After the hike, it was time for a nice BBQ, some wine, and a dominoes marathon. Sadly Sunday came, and it was time to go home and back to reality. But it was a fun weekend and great to be outdoors!
