Routines - as many of you know I have been traveling non-stop for almost a year or more now. My only constant routine has been getting to the airport and through security. This has made it pretty difficult to do any consistent training. Any time I seem to make progress, I am interrupted and fall two steps back. So right now, I actually lack any travel plans. I am hopeful that I can get back into a routine - in terms of work, play, seeing friends / family, and exercise.
Exercise - I can probably count my work outs from the last 6 weeks on my hands. Not a very effective way to get in shape or improve my performance at any event.
Monday: So, I started on Monday with boot camp, which I do love and miss. I had to say I was a bit disappointed on Monday. First, it was not the most challenging work out. Although Hoover ball is usually fun, last night just was not. Part of the issue was 26 people and one medicine ball just does not allow enough people to play at enough time. The other issue was the other team just gave the ball to the same people and the same person to score. Slamming a 12 pound medicine ball to the ground over a 6 foot net for someone who is over 6 foot is not too difficult or impressive. But more importantly, no one really got to play. On his team, most people were left standing around with no role. Our team just had no ability to get and move the ball around.
Now Eric would say I was complaining or a sore loser - uh, in fact he did say that. That's o.k. But I can honestly say it had nothing to do with the outcome. Yes, I am competitive. Sure, I love to win. Don't get me wrong. But that was not the issue. I did not even care about doing squats for 10-15 minutes - other than the boredom factor. It was just about playing fairly and people being aware enough of others to allow them to "play" too. Eric says you cannot make other people have integrity, but it does not mean I have to like it when they don't. (I did sink to yelling out and trying to provoke them to let everyone play, but not sure that worked.) I spoke briefly to a few people on the other team and they agreed with me - being cast into the background almost made it a waste of time that was no fun. I guess what also makes it disappointing is that we have so few outright "play" game days (and that's o.k.) that it is sad not to enjoy it. But I after a day or so, I did get over it.
Tuesday: Jane and I hit the pool. After the triathlon on Sunday and my concern with my swimming (or lack thereof), I wanted to get some endurance up and practice, practice, practice. So we spent about 35 minutes working on that.
Wednesday: We were back at boot camp for some running. Which while I need it - I hate it. After warm up, it was a mile run. I ran it in 9:11. Slow and I can do better, but it was better than I thought it would be in light of the lack of running I have done. From there we had to run 5-200 meter sprints and then 3-400 meter sprints, and then thankfully we ran out of time before the 2-800 meter sprints we were supposed to do.
Nutrition - So if I had one weakest link (like I only have one ha ha) - this would be it. While I was able to give up eating processed sugar many years ago, I have the hardest time dealing with this nutrition thing. Yes, I know in my head what I am supposed to eat and not supposed to eat (and drink for that matter). But I find it so hard to find the right things and cook well with my crazy days. Probably somewhat of an excuse - granted.
But I need to sit down and figure out short cuts that will get me the nutrition I need without long, drawn out cooking processes. I just don't have the time or energy on most days. While I have started doing more reading and bought some fresh food and vegetables, I still have a long, long way to go. But what I have done this week is started eating breakfast within an hour of getting up - rather than 2 1/2 hours later at the office. I am also starting to balance my meals, so they are not so carbohydrate loaded. So in the next few days, I am going to sit down and try to figure out how to make it work for me - any suggestions are always welcome!!!!
So there you have it for now . . . hitting the restart button.

I find that the microwavable veggies in a bag are helpful.
Salads, easy and quick with pre-made chicken for protein. Of course I like alot of stuff so I add beans, cheese, some type of fruit like apples, dried cranberries, etc. And nuts! If you have olive oil, a wine vinegar or basalmic vinegar (and maybe mustard and honey) around, you always have a salad dressing you can make quick and easy.
Fish is always quick and easy. Add a little salt and pepper, maybe some fresh herbs (or dried herbs), some citrus...into a hot pan and dinner in a few minutes. Add those microwavable veggies and/or a salad and you're done.
I also have a really quick recipe for pork tenderloin. 10 minutes and you're done.
Cut the tenderloin into 1-1/2 thick pcs.
salt & pepper. Put into a hot oiled pan and cook 3-4 minutes per side. Take out. Deglaze with pomegranite juice, some chicken stock (I keep some TJs concentrated stuff in the pantry), add some dried cherries (I use cranberries because I usually have that around to add to the salads). Add some worshtershire sause, if handy. Reduce. Pour over tenderloin pcs. And have with a salad. Done!
I'm finding that BC requires me to find very quick recipies or ones that use left overs.
