Boston started with a bright, sunny day. But it was very warm and very humid. We were off on the Freedom Trail.
had done the Freedom Trail back in 1997, my first trip to Boston. But it is just a great way to walk around the city and see different things. Of course we stopped at the state capitol building.
We then had lunch at Cheers - a.k.a. the Bull and Finch club.
What was funny to me was here was this neighborhood bar, which was then imitated on T.V. Because of the T.V. show, they changed their name to Cheers. Thereby imitating T.V. Now it seems to be more of a tourist trap and no longer the neighborhood bar. But you can get a cheers mug for only $5.00!Then we were back on the trail - that was until we veered off for some shopping. I did not bring enough shirts so it was launder or purchase. So, purchase it was. I can always use a few shirts. But we were off again. Here was Paul Revere.
We were almost done - heading across the bridge to see the U.S. Constitution and Bunker Hill (note the sunshine and clouds):
Out of the blue it started to rain. Fortunately, we were not too far across the bridge and we could run for cover under an awning. We were about to leave our shelter to hail a cab when it started coming down in buckets - leaving everyone to scurry. We eventually got a cab - without having to leave our shelter. Later the news reported about 3/4ths of an inch of rain in about 30-40 minutes.
So we headed back to the hotel to freshen up and then we were off to watch a Red Sox game at Fenway Park - which thankfully had not been rained out.
Note the clouds over the Green Monster:
It was a fun game with lots of scoring. I think there were more than 20 runs scored. Although personally I am not a Red Sox fan and would have liked to seen them lose, they ended up winning, making lots of happy Boston fans. I did partake in beer and a good hot dog. But stay away from the Monster Dog. Way too much hot dog and not enough bread for any one human being at one time. Life is all about balance and this was not it. But Boston does have one fun tradition - which is the singing of Sweet Caroline.
Who doesn't like a good Neil Diamond tune? So after the game, we headed back to the hotel bar, but cannot say there was anyone too interesting there that night. TOMORROW: Cape Code, Rhode Island and Connecticut - more state capitals (cannot wait to be back in Hartford it has been at least 4 months!!!)
